Alina Radu is a Romanian artist who lives and works in Berlin. “21st Century” is a representation of what humanity has become today and how all this impacts and debilitates nature. It is depicted by insects, highlighting some of the main problems we face at the beginning of the 3rd millennium. This exhibition consists of a series of 14 works, combining Radu's passion for sculpture with her love for nature. Her sculptures combine the biggest societal problems through the faces of the voiceless - on the border of extinction - INSECTS.
Radu is expressing actual problems that we confront. The ones that may lead us to extermination probably - as individuals and as a species. Are we losing our individuality? Is media a bad influence? It evolved so rapidly; spreading hate, manipulating, controlling and keeping the control.
Attracted by natural textures, Radu developed her own working technique using elements found in nature, creating the desired shapes and preserving all in resin layers. The main materials are wood, oak shells, pine cone scales and other natural and unique elements - assembled together, as a puzzle to form unique shapes and patterns are creating a natural texture for her sculptures.
Alina Radu was born in Timisoara, Romania in times of revolution against the communist regime. Her love for sculpting started in her early childhood when she was modeling plasticine. Now based in Berlin, the artist sources various natural elements found in the forests surrounding the city to create her provocative sculptures. Global warming, climate change, diseases, food and water poisoning, fossil fuel, corruption, and ignorance are reflected in her sculptures.
